Zeal vs DocuSign

DocuSign is the most recognised way to get something signed. Zeal includes native e-signature as well, plus the drafting, negotiation and obligation monitoring around it, so it can replace DocuSign or run alongside it. DocuSign's published tiers place redlining and AI review at its upper and enterprise plans; Zeal includes both on its entry tier.

Who each one is for

Zeal suits you if

The signing part already works and the rest does not. You are drafting in Word, negotiating over email, and keeping track of what was agreed in a spreadsheet. You want one place where the agreement is drafted, redlined, signed and then actually monitored, without an enterprise tier to get there. Signature is included, so that can be Zeal too, or stay with DocuSign if your counterparties expect it.

DocuSign suits you if

What you need is signature, at a volume and with a level of recognition no table beats. Your documents arrive finished, your counterparties already know the experience, and the questions of who drafts and who tracks the obligations are answered somewhere else in your business.

Capability by capability

Every DocuSign cell states what DocuSign publishes on its own pages, with the date it was read. Where DocuSign publishes nothing about a capability, there is no row rather than a blank one.

What this looks like in the editor

A portfolio of signed agreements in Zeal with extracted terms and renewal dates

The same agreement after signature: terms extracted, obligations dated, renewals surfaced. Signing produced the document. This is the part that tells you what is in it.

Where DocuSign is the better choice

DocuSign is an e-signature business, and signature is what it is built around. Its practical advantage is reach: most counterparties have signed through it before, so the signing step needs no explanation and no support call. Across high volumes and unfamiliar counterparties, that recognition has real operational value.

It also fits where documents are not negotiated at all. Onboarding paperwork, consent forms and standard NDAs sent at volume need a dependable signature step and nothing before or after it. Contract intelligence adds little in that situation, and an organisation that has already built integrations against the DocuSign API has a sunk investment worth weighing.

What switching from DocuSign involves

Zeal can replace all three steps. If your current sequence is Word, then email, then DocuSign, drafting, redlining and signature all happen in one place instead, which is the point: the version everyone is arguing over and the version that gets signed are the same file.

Signature can also stay where it is. Zeal integrates with DocuSign, so counterparties keep the signing experience they recognise while drafting, negotiation and monitoring move across. Teams that prefer to switch in stages usually do this until the DocuSign renewal, then consolidate.

Signed agreements import in bulk, so monitoring starts with the portfolio you already have rather than only the contracts you sign from today onward.

Questions buyers ask

Does Zeal replace DocuSign?
It does not have to. Zeal includes e-signature on the entry tier, so it can, but it also integrates with DocuSign. Most teams comparing the two are not unhappy with signing; they are unhappy with everything on either side of it. Keeping DocuSign for signature and adding Zeal for drafting and monitoring is a normal outcome.
Which one is better for small teams?
Zeal, on the published tiering. The capabilities a small contract team actually needs, redlining, AI review and monitoring, sit at DocuSign's upper and Enterprise tiers: redlining and approvals show as contact sales on IAM Professional, and AI-Assisted Review is Enterprise only. Zeal includes DOCX editing and AI review on its $99 entry tier.
What are the envelope limits?
DocuSign's eSignature plans list a cap of 100 envelopes per user per year on Standard and Business Pro. That is roughly two a week, which is fine for occasional signing and tight for a team whose work is agreements. Zeal's e-signature is native to the entry tier with unlimited volume, so sending is not something you have to ration or forecast.
Which one tells me when a contract is up for renewal?
Zeal. Its monitoring agents surface renewal dates, obligations and deviations across the portfolio at team tier. DocuSign's Agreement Manager processes documents and extracts data, with a listed one-time allowance of 5,000 historical documents per user, and its AI data extraction currently covers English, French and German.
What does the Zeal trial involve?
Fourteen days on the entry tier. A card is taken at checkout and the subscription converts automatically when the trial ends unless you cancel first, which you can do any time from account settings. Your contracts can be exported in their original format whenever you want them.

Signing is an event. The agreement is the commitment.
